From the Free Academy to CUNY: Illustrating Public Higher Education in New York City, 1847-1997 by Sandra Shoiock Roff, On May 7, 1847 the New York State Legislature chartered "a Free Academy for the purpose of extending the benefits of education gratuitously to parsons who have been pupils in the common schools of the ... city and county of New York". A month later, in a referendum, the voters of New York City overwhelmingly approved the legislation and agreed to have the Free Academy supported by local taxation. From this root grew a system of eleven senior colleges, one four-year technical college, six community colleges and graduate schools and professional programs -- the City University of New York. On May 7, 1997, 150 years after "charter day", alumni, students, faculty, and administrators celebrated the birth of publicly supported higher education in the United States. The United States Postal Service issued a commemorative postal card. An exhibit that opened at Baruch College -- site of the original Free Academy building -- brought to life the activities of the past 150 years through images and artifacts. This book reflects the curators' desire to make this material more widely available and they have expanded the text in order to narrate the major developments of the period 1847-1997. In addition to a general overview, the book treats such topics as the development of public higher education for women in New York City, student life and publications, athletics, and the colleges in times of war. From the Free Academy to CUNY provides the first generally accessible narrative of the development of the City University of New York from its inception in 1847 as the Free Academy to its present status as the largest urban university in the country. The book includes an extensive bibliography of books, articles, dissertations and major policy documents, as well as chapter notes and an index. The Free Academy was born in controversy and today the City University of New York is again in the midst of controversial changes.
Handbook of Radical Polymerization by Krzysztof Matyjaszewski, X Mechanism, synthesis, characterization, and applications of free radical polymerization (Co)polymers prepared via free radical mechanism, together with polyolefins, comprise the largest portion of the commodity plastics industry and are also used for preparation of many specialty materials. Handbook of Radical Polymerization provides a concise source of information on mechanisms, synthetic techniques, and characterization methods and addresses future trends for polymers made by free radical intermediates. A one-stop, at-your-fingertips source of information for students, researchers, technologists, and industrial managers, the Handbook functions as a single reference of the conventional and controlled/living radical polymerization methods. Two expert editors collect and present historical background of the technique, basic information regarding various free radical polymerization systems, and state-of-the-art experimental techniques and industrial applications. Chapters written by internationally acclaimed experts in their respective fields include: Theory of Radical ReactionsThe Kinetics of Free Radical PolymerizationIndustrial Applications and ProcessesNitroxide Mediated Living Radical PolymerizationAtom Transfer Radical PolymerizationControl of Free Radical Polymerization by Chain Transfer MethodsMacromolecular Engineering by Controlled Radical Polymerization Guaranteed to have a long shelf life, the Handbook of Radical Polymerization promises to be an indispensable resource for chemists, chemical engineers, material scientists, and graduate students in the field, as well as a valuable addition to industrial, academic, and government libraries.

Lock-free and wait-free algorithms - In contrast to algorithms that protect access to shared data with locks, lock-free and wait-free algorithms are specially designed to allow multiple threads to read and write shared data concurrently without corrupting it. "Lock-free" refers to the fact that a thread cannot lock up: every step it takes brings progress to the system. Free (Free album) - Free is the second album of British rock group Free, recorded and released in 1969. The band had spent time touring after their debut album Tons Of Sobs the previous year, and there is a marked difference in the musicianship of the band as well as Paul Rodgers's voice. Free at Last (Free album) - Free At Last is the sixth album (fifth studio album) by British rock band Free. The band had broken up in April 1971 due to differences between singer Paul Rodgers and bassist Andy Fraser, the drug problems of guitarist Paul Kossoff, and inconsistent record sales.
