Drawing the Line: How Mason & Dixon Surveyed the Most Famous Border in America by Edwin Danson,
" Made famous as line between free and slave states before War Between the States. The survey establishing Maryland-Pennsylvania boundary began in 1763; halted by Indian wars 1767; continued to southwest corner 1782: marked 1784." Behind these words, inscribed on a solitary monument in southwest Pennsylvania, lies the complex, compelling tale of the most famous surveyors’ line ever drawn. Originally created to settle an eighty-year border dispute between two aristocratic colonial families, the Mason-Dixon line not only became one of the greatest scientific achievements of its time but, nearly a century later, came to mark the monumental boundary between free and slave states. In the first nonfiction chronicle of this ambitious undertaking, professional surveyor Edwin Danson takes us on a grand tour through a world now mostly lost to us. Drawing the Line reconstructs the making of the Mason-Dixon line, from the infamous quarrels between the patrician Baltimore family of Maryland and the powerful Penn family of Pennsylvania to the harrowing fields and forests of eighteenth-century America, where we accompany Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, two young, exuberant English surveyors, as they risk their lives to resolve the epic border feud and establish a precise survey that had begun to seem " impossible for the Art of Man." After five grueling years in which the two intrepid Englishmen faced heavy rains and freezing sleet, along with angry Indians, they finally completed their assignment. Their great boundary survey was the first and, for many years, the most ambitious geodetic survey ever conducted. It set a precedent for the precise measurement and mapping ofvast land distances. In addition to surveying 325 miles of boundary lines, Mason and Dixon measured the first degree of latitude and took the first scientific gravity measurements ever recorded in America.

A Guide to Pictorial Perspective
A Guide to Pictorial Perspective
Meeting the challenge of realistic drawing involves the application of science to an individual design sense. Here is a clear, jargon-free primer on recreating objects from nature by using perspective techniques. Author Benjamin R. Green's straightforward approach teaches artists and students at all levels how to visually rationalize the differences between form and appearance. Green begins with definitions of lines (parallel, perpendicular, inclined, horizontal, and vertical) and discussions of the seat of the eye and the vanishing point. He examines the relative situation of the spectator and the object to be drawn, compares parallel and oblique views, and discusses drawing objects with more than four sides and curved-line objects such as arches. Numerous illustrations appear throughout the text.

Carolingian art - Carolingian art is the roughly 120-year period from about AD 780 to 900 — during the reign of Charlemagne and his immediate heirs — popularly known as the Carolingian Renaissance. For the first time, Northern European kings patronized classical Mediterranean Roman art forms, blending classical forms with Germanic ones, creating entirely new innovations in figurine line drawing and setting the stage for the rise of Romanesque art and eventually Gothic art in the West.

Free Art license - The Free Art license is the English language version of the License Art Libre, a French copyleft license for works of art. It represents an attempt to craft a Free license in the spirit of the GNU General Public License adapted for work of art.

Free art - Free art refers to any art that is distributed to the widest possible public at no direct cost, including street performance, performance art, graffiti, sticker art, coffeehouse poetry and Internet-distributed art.

Line drawing algorithm - A line drawing algorithm is a graphical algorithm for approximating a line segment on discrete graphical media. On discrete media, such as pixel-based displays and printers, line drawing requires such an approximation (in nontrivial cases).
